VILLA BALZANA

THE HOUSE

THE STORY

The house dates back to the 1600’s and was renovated in the 1700’s, with much of the original stone still evident both outside and inside. For over 50 years it served as a local watering hole, first as l’Osteria Il Cacciatore, famous for it’s Sunday grills, card tables and bocce court and subsequently as an eclectic candle-lit dining experiment, La Busa De Bacco. In the mid 1990’s the dining licence was revoked, the owners left, and the building fell into disrepair.

Cycling around the Berici Hills one glorious Spring afternoon in 1998 Claudia and I stumbled across Villabalzana with it’s off-the-beaten-track charm, wonderfully clean air and great views of the pre-Alps, the Piccole Dolomiti. We ended up staying, as you do. Having restored the house and gardens it has been home to us, our three children any many guests since then.

The entire house is now available for rent on an annual basis. Contact us for availability and price.

Period Italian country house on 1.2 acres (0,5 hectare), idyllically situated in the Berici Hills with uninterrupted views of the Dolomites, just 20 minutes drive from Vicenza city centre.

Renovation

Rescued from neglect in 1999 and fully renovated to the highest standards, the house features original exposed timber beams, simple stone walls, terracotta tiled floors and over 30 large double glazed windows which fill the home with an abundance of healthy natural light.

When we started the renovation on the house we literally had no idea of what we were getting ourselves into. We knew that it would be extensive but by the end we had removed the roof and replaced it with the original terracotta tiles on top of an insulated and ventilated roofing structure (helps keep the top floor cool in summer, warm in winter and free from moisture).
